Variants of this song have been published widely as children's books; what the variants have in common is 'that they are about dark-skinned boys who are always children, never learning from experience'. When they are all gathered, they hear from their host that each one of them has in someway caused the death of an innocent person and that justice had not be served in their cases. Contextualising the publication of the nursery rhyme in 1922 within European and North American contexts shows, however, that the book fitted very well with European discourses of race, and the images show similarity to caricatures of black people in the United States. One title is so offensive that it causes disgust and indignation. The other is the one we all grew up knowing, never realizing the the disgust and indignation it caused Native Americans.
Fabian is very funny as Mike Raven, a spoilt, arrogant playboy. It depicted ten little mouse babies who meet unfortunate ends until there are only two left, who then attempt and fail suicide. Thus, the killings on Indian Island are arguably acts of justice. The chemistry between the actors is fantastic - Dennis Price and Wilfrid Hyde-White work well together as the judge and the doctor, as do Leo Genn and Daliah Lavi, two characters who have an unexplained history together.
